After months of anticipation, War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, finally hit theatres on August 14. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Telugu superstar Jr NTR, the film is the sixth instalment of YRF’s Spy Universe and the sequel to the blockbuster War (2019). However, the action-packed entertainer is facing stiff competition at the box office from Rajinikanth’s Coolie.
In advance bookings, War 2 managed ₹20.57 crore, whereas Coolie surged ahead with ₹37.20 crore for Day 1. By 4 PM on release day, trade reports indicated that War 2 had collected ₹21.42 crore net in India, compared to Coolie’s ₹35.51 crore. Interestingly, while the Hindi occupancy was just 16.37%, the film performed better in the South — with Telugu occupancy at 74.68% and Tamil at 27.85%. Chennai and Hyderabad audiences showed stronger turnout than Mumbai and NCR.

Critical reception for War 2 has been mixed. While some viewers hail it as a grand visual spectacle, others find it predictable. The Indian Express’s Shubhra Gupta rated it 1.5 stars, calling it a “glossy snooze-fest” that struggles to hold attention.
For Jr NTR, War 2 marks his Hindi film debut, and his fans celebrated the release with street festivities. At the pre-release event, the actor expressed gratitude towards Hrithik Roshan for warmly welcoming him on set, sharing that their bond had grown stronger during the 75 days of shooting.
Despite towering expectations and star power, It seems to be lagging behind its rival on opening day. Whether it can pick up momentum over the Independence Day weekend remains to be seen.
With action sequences, star charisma, and the backing of YRF’s spy franchise, War 2 still has a chance to turn the tide at the box office — but the competition is fierce.
