Jagdeep Dhankar Resigns: Race for Successor Begins

In a surprising and sudden move, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post, citing health reasons. His resignation, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, takes immediate effect. Dhankhar expressed his gratitude to the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Council of Ministers, stating that he was stepping down to prioritize health and follow medical advice.

This announcement has come as a shock to many, including the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which holds a majority in the vice-presidential electoral college comprising members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Just 10 days ago, the 74-year-old had expressed his intention to complete his term until August 2027—unless there was “divine intervention.”

Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns: Race for Successor Begins

Dhankhar, formerly the Governor of West Bengal, had a reputation for being vocal and firm, especially on issues involving state governments and parliamentary conduct. His predecessor, M Venkaiah Naidu, was also a veteran BJP leader and cabinet minister before taking up the constitutional role.

With Jagdeep Dhankhar stepping down unexpectedly, the race to appoint the next Vice President has begun. Speculation is rife within political circles, with names of senior governors, seasoned BJP leaders, and current Union ministers being considered. “We are still processing it,” a BJP leader said, adding that the party is likely to choose a “solid, non-controversial” candidate with considerable experience.

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has commented cryptically on the situation, stating that “only he or the government knows the real reason” behind the abrupt resignation.

As the nation awaits a formal announcement on the next Vice President nominee, Dhankhar’s exit has certainly stirred the political waters in Delhi.
