Modi Jets Off to London: India-UK FTA Signing Expected During 4-Day Trip

PM Narendra Modi has officially embarked on a crucial two-nation visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives from July 23 to 26, with key diplomatic and economic outcomes expected—especially the long-awaited India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Modi’s visit to the UK (July 23–24) comes after three years of rigorous negotiation over the FTA, which is now set to be signed during this trip. The agreement is poised to eliminate tariffs on 99% of Indian exports to the UK and reduce duties on 90% of British goods, including luxury items like whisky and cars. This strategic trade pact aims to double bilateral trade between India and the UK from the current $60 billion to $120 billion by 2030.

During his stay, PM Modi will hold wide-ranging discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer covering trade, defense, climate change, innovation, education, and technology collaboration. He will also meet King Charles III, marking a symbolic strengthening of ties between the two nations.

The FTA features dedicated chapters on goods, services, innovation, government procurement, and intellectual property rights, making it one of the most comprehensive trade deals India has negotiated. Once signed by both commerce ministers, the agreement will need ratification by the British Parliament before taking effect.

In addition, both countries have concluded the Double Contribution Convention Agreement, a social security pact that will prevent Indian professionals working temporarily in the UK from having to contribute to British social security funds—an important step toward easing mobility and reducing financial burden on skilled workers.

Following the UK leg, PM Modi will visit the Maldives (July 25–26) to further strengthen India’s ties in the Indian Ocean region, with a focus on strategic, security, and development cooperation.
