Marking the end of an era, India Post has announced that its 50-year-old Registered Post service will be officially discontinued from September 1, 2025, and fully merged with Speed Post. This strategic shift, confirmed via an internal circular, aims to streamline operations, modernize mail services, and eliminate functional overlap.
Registered Post has long been known for its secure and accountable mail delivery, offering features such as proof of posting, restricted delivery, and acknowledgement of receipt. However, in recent years, Speed Post has evolved to offer similar, and in many cases superior, features — including real-time tracking, faster delivery, and enhanced reliability. Starting next month, Speed Post will absorb all critical functions of Registered Post, combining speed with accountability in a single service.
This merger is part of a larger digital and infrastructure overhaul outlined in the Union Budget 2025–26, with a focus on transforming India Post into a rural logistics and communication powerhouse. To ensure a smooth transition, all postal departments — including booking counters, mail operations, customer support, and tech systems — have been instructed to complete software updates, staff training, and public communication by July 31, 2025.
From now on, any document, receipt, form, or digital portal that previously mentioned “Registered Post” will be updated to reflect only “Speed Post”. New Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and operational workflows are being drafted to maintain clarity and uniformity across all levels of service.
The merger is expected to benefit a wide range of users — from individual customers to businesses and government departments — by providing faster, traceable, and secure delivery under one simplified service umbrella. With this bold move, India Post takes a big step toward a more agile and modern postal future.
