Heavy rains lashed Gurugram on Monday afternoon, throwing normal life out of gear as major roads turned into streams and traffic came to a standstill. The city recorded over 100 mm of rainfall by evening, with Wazirabad tehsil reporting 116 mm between 8 am and 6 pm.
NH-48, Badshahpur, Manesar, Sohna, and Rajiv Chowk were among the worst-hit areas, witnessing massive waterlogging and traffic jams that lasted for hours. Vehicles broke down in deep water, leaving commuters stranded. Videos circulating online showed traffic police and locals wading through knee-deep water, pushing vehicles to safety and managing the chaos.

While the downpour brought much-needed relief from the sweltering heat, it simultaneously prompted the Gurugram District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to issue a work-from-home advisory for Tuesday. Authorities have asked corporate offices and private institutions to allow employees to work remotely and instructed schools to conduct online classes.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a yellow alert for September 1, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds — a forecast that proved accurate. Authorities have issued an orange alert for Tuesday and warned of more showers.
Authorities including Gurugram police commissioner Vikas Arora and deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar inspected NH-48 and Sohna Road late Monday night to assess the situation. Meanwhile, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) deployed suction pumps and cleaning teams to tackle waterlogging.
The Haryana government has instructed all field officers to remain at their posts until September 5 and monitor the situation closely. Citizens facing waterlogging issues can reach the GMDA helpline (1800-180-1817) or WhatsApp (7840001817).
Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and exercise caution with more rain likely.
