Veteran tribal leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a rich legacy of social reform, political courage, and relentless advocacy for tribal rights. His son, Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, confirmed the news, stating that the former CM had been undergoing treatment in Delhi for kidney-related ailments. He had suffered a stroke and was on life support prior to his passing.
Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village of present-day Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district, Soren’s journey began as a grassroots reformer. He earned the nickname ‘Guruji’ for his work in setting up night schools for underprivileged tribal children and for raising his voice against the exploitative money lending system that plagued tribal communities. He protested against social injustice long before he entered formal politics.
As the founding figure of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Shibu Soren became the face of the Jharkhand statehood movement, tirelessly demanding a separate state for tribal identity and governance. His influence extended beyond Jharkhand into parts of Odisha and West Bengal. He served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times and also held key roles in the central government.
Soren’s contribution to the creation of Jharkhand and his efforts to uplift tribal voices earned him admiration across party lines. Even political opponents respected him for his unwavering dedication to his people and his land.
His passing marks the end of an era in Jharkhand politics. Leaders from across the country have paid tribute to ‘Guruji’, acknowledging his monumental role in shaping the political and social landscape of eastern India.
Shibu Soren will forever be remembered as the man who gave a voice to the voiceless and changed the course of Jharkhand’s history.
