An Air India domestic flight from Kochi faced a tense moment at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Monday when it veered off the runway during landing amid heavy rains, resulting in multiple tyre bursts and suspected engine damage.
The aircraft, an Airbus A320 operating as Flight AI 2744, encountered poor visibility and slick runway conditions caused by ongoing monsoon showers as it approached for landing. Shortly after touchdown, the jet deviated from its intended path, leading to what aviation authorities classify as a runway excursion.

Early assessments suggest that adverse weather played a key role in the deviation. Despite the sudden veer, the aircraft managed to taxi under its own power to the terminal, where all passengers and crew disembarked safely. No injuries were reported.
Sources revealed that three of the aircraft’s tyres burst during the incident, and visuals taken post-landing show noticeable damage to the nacelle of the right engine. A clump of grass visible near the engine’s rear casing indicates the aircraft likely made significant contact with the side area adjacent to the tarmac.

Following the excursion, airport personnel discovered damage to infrastructure, including three signage boards and four edge lights along the runway. One of the plane’s wheels reportedly rolled into the grassy perimeter off the paved surface.

The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew have since disembarked. The aircraft is currently grounded for checks. Passenger and crew safety remains our utmost priority.”
In line with standard procedure, both pilots have been temporarily removed from flying duties as part of an internal investigation. A comprehensive inspection of the aircraft is now underway.
