"No Compromise, Even at a Cost": PM Modi Stands Firm as US Threatens 50% Tariffs

In a bold and emotionally charged statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it clear that India will not compromise its farmers, fishermen, and livestock holders — even if it means facing steep consequences from the United States. His remarks came just a day after US President Donald Trump doubled the India tariff on exports to 50%, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, PM Modi said, “India will never compromise the interests of its farmers, livestock holders, and fishermen. And I know I will have to pay a huge price for this personally, but I am ready.” The comment was widely seen as a direct response to the tariff escalation and a signal that India will not buckle under external pressure.

India Tariff Crisis 2025: Modi Refuses to Bow to Trump’s Demands

The new US tariffs — set to take effect on August 27 — target nearly all Indian goods, risking the viability of $86.5 billion in annual exports. Key sectors like agriculture and fisheries, including shrimp exports, are among those expected to suffer the most. According to analysts, a sustained 50% tariff could slash India’s GDP by up to 0.4%, putting growth below the 6% mark for the year.

India has labeled the tariffs “unfair” and “unjustified,” especially given its stance that Russian oil imports are essential for national energy security. Meanwhile, the US continues to push for zero-duty access to its agricultural and dairy products in Indian markets.

Despite the economic risk, PM Modi’s unwavering stance reflects a deep commitment to rural India. His message was clear: the well-being of India’s agrarian community will not be traded away, even under global economic pressure.
