The United States is preparing to send several thousand additional troops to the Middle East to bolster security and provide support to Israel if necessary, according to the Pentagon chief. This move comes in response to a recent missile attack on Israel by Iran. The US warned Tehran that the attack would have “severe consequences” and vowed to collaborate with Israel to hold Iran accountable.
While the US previously helped Israel thwart an Iranian missile attack in April, it had also urged caution to avoid escalating tensions in the region. However, following this latest assault, US officials are emphasizing Israel’s right to defend itself and signaling that the US will assist in any retaliatory action.

“There will be severe consequences for this attack, and we will work with Israel to ensure that happens,” said National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan during a White House press briefing. This came after Iran launched approximately 180 ballistic missiles at Israel. The attack resulted in the death of a Palestinian in the West Bank and injuries to two Israelis from shrapnel and debris, which also caused fires and property damage.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported intercepting a significant portion of the missiles. Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder confirmed that US Navy destroyers fired around a dozen interceptors at Iranian missiles, with support from unspecified US allies. Jordan’s Public Security Directorate also stated that its air defenses intercepted missiles and drones over its airspace during the assault.
