Kolkata Doctor's Assault and Murder

Supreme Court and Public Demand Action in Kolkata Rape Case

The Kolkata rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor has sparked widespread outrage and demands for action. Indian-origin doctors have written an open letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, calling for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals and expedited justice for the victim’s family. The letter also criticized the systemic failures that allowed the RG Kar hospital incident to occur.

The Supreme Court has intervened, condemning the West Bengal government’s attempts to stifle peaceful protests and mishandle the case. A 10-member national taskforce has been established to ensure the safety of medical personnel, with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) expressing support and readiness to collaborate on security measures.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is expected to provide a report on the crime and the associated mob vandalism at RG Kar hospital in the next court session. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has described the rape and murder as “horrific” and criticized the lack of workplace safety for women as a denial of equality. He highlighted the urgency of addressing these systemic issues before another similar incident occurs.

Congress workers in Siliguri have staged a candlelight march, calling for justice and government accountability in the case.
